What's new in Next3Trains 1.11
Justin Clarke-Salt
Version 1.11 is the iOS 27 release. The short version:
A new app icon
The icon is now a proper layered icon. On iOS 26 and 27 that means it gets Light, Dark, Tinted and Clear versions from the system, with real depth to the three trains. On older versions of iOS, and on the Apple Watch, it’s the same design rendered flat and noticeably sharper - the three trains no longer merge into one shape at small sizes. As a side effect the app is about 1.3 MB smaller. The same logo now appears inside the app too, on the welcome and empty screens and at the top of a new About section in Settings.
Disruption Summaries
On devices with Apple Intelligence, the app can summarise the disruption notices for a train in a couple of plain-English sentences, entirely on your device. It’s off until you turn it on. See What are Disruption Summaries?.
Siri
You can now ask for a destination - “Next trains to London Bridge in Next3Trains” - on iPhone and Apple Watch, leaving from your current route’s departure station. Siri shows a card of your trains as well as reading them out, understands “with” and “using” as well as “in Next3Trains”, and on iOS 27 with Siri AI can find any station by name and answer questions about whatever the app is showing. See Siri and Apple Intelligence in iOS 27.
Alerts open the right route
Tapping a delay, cancellation or platform change notification now opens the app on the route the alert is about.
Widgets on your days off
There’s a new On non-commuting days choice under Commuting Hours in Settings. Widgets and watch complications can keep showing the day off card as they always have, carry on showing live train times every day, or show nothing at all until your next commuting day. See How do commuting hours work?.
Apple Watch
The complications are now called Next3Trains and Next3Trains (Arc) in the complication picker, matching the app. See Using Next3Trains on Apple Watch.
Accessibility
A large uplift, prompted by testers - thank you:
- Status badges are drawn in their status colour on a light tint, instead of white text on a solid colour, which was hard to read in Dark Mode and got worse with Increase Contrast turned on. This applies to the app and the widgets. In the Dynamic Island, the icon now changes shape when your next train is delayed or cancelled, rather than only changing colour.
- VoiceOver should read a whole board without being interrupted by the app refreshing itself.
- More things are announced: switching route, a disruption summary finishing, planned work arriving, and a train’s details finishing loading.
- Notices that contain links say so, and each link is available as a VoiceOver action.
- The Live Activity now speaks the service type and coach count.
- The setup cards - location, notifications, commuting hours and Disruption Summaries - keep their buttons on screen at the largest text sizes, instead of letting them scroll out of reach.
See Is Next3Trains accessible? for the full picture, including the deliberate limits.
Smaller things
- A long train’s coach diagram fades at the edge when there’s more to scroll to, so a twelve-coach train no longer looks like a five-coach one.
- On iPad, long station names wrap onto a second line instead of being cut off, and the cards in each row line up along the top.
- Turning notifications off while your phone is offline now sticks; before, alerts could carry on arriving.
- A Live Activity from the morning no longer reappears when you open the app in the evening.
- The app now knows how old a background location fix really is, so the widget and Siri are less likely to pick a route based on where you were a while ago. A bug that could stop the “Always” location prompt from ever appearing is fixed too.
- Booked train lengths re-download themselves if iOS clears them out to save space.
Requirements
The app still supports iOS 16, watchOS 9.2 and macOS 14. Everything above degrades gracefully on older versions - features that need iOS 26 or 27 simply don’t appear.
